Nyxxie - Buzz Editor? Air

First and foremost I would like to point out this is not an article regarding the most recent BSF & Sabin argument (I’d like to call it a debate but it surpassed that stage with BSF’s topic). Although that’s neither here nor there for this case. This article is regarding Nyxxie and her current Editorial role with the Buzz for which, in my humblest opinion, started the chain of events we later began to witness.

Now more to the point. I’ve always backed Nyxxie as an Editor, after all it was me who hired her in the first place. Despite the controversy I received even back then (which shows the longevity of the needless Nyxxie-bashing as this was before she made HDO), I knew she would be good for the Buzz. I proved myself right. Despite what people think and what people tend to forget, the Buzz is voluntary. Every member of the team will (or at least did, I can’t speak on their behalf any longer) spend a significant amount of time making sure the Buzz is as good as it can be.

So why am I defending Nyxxie you ask, considering my point of this article? Simple. She IS a good Editor but things have taken a turn for the worse. As far as I’m aware, Nyxxie made HDO purely because of her work within the Buzz. Despite the negativity, this was at least deserved. However, as an Editor you should expect certain things that a Moderator shouldn’t be giving.

PhriendlyPhief once said to me, “From an editor or a writer I'd expect controversy, hearsay and some libellous stuff. None of that would I expect or want from a Moderator.” To me, this sums up my point. I do not and should never expect a Moderator to be posting such controversial comics (with the Sabin issue aside). I also certainly do not expect a Moderator to be bashing regular players with such personal attacks, whether they are light-hearted or not.

Yes, this is a game. Yes, this is an online newspaper and yes; you are not paid to staff that or the game in general. However, you still chose to accept the position of Moderator – you are never told that you MUST join. It’s always a question. Thus, you have responsibilities to uphold and a general sense of what is right or wrong. I would not expect Nyxxie to be fired as Editor from this but something I most certainly DO expect is for Nyxxie to realise that the Editor position is something she should relieve herself of.

When I was a Moderator I realised this myself and that is why I got less and less involved with the front running of the Buzz. I didn’t publicly state this at the time because there was no need to – I was also hoping Nyxxie would realise this by herself. Once I got promoted to S.Moderator I decided to leave the Buzz solely with Nyxxie so I could focus on my Moderator duties and not let the above happen. I then let myself become an overhead peer to it all, just keeping an eye from the background that things weren’t getting compromised in ways they shouldn’t have. Like now, this is what I believe Nyxxie should be doing instead of a full Editor. Mika appears to be doing the majority of the work these days but don’t expect him to admit to that. He’s a good guy.

So I bring you the penultimate part of my somewhat-essay length article. If you’ve gotten this far, I congratulate you for your patience and hope it wasn’t a waste of your time. You spend countless hours on Bootleggers so what’s another few minutes to read something regarding the game you play so much? I guess we can look at those two rather large topics in the Game Forum for evidence of that.

The new round called for less staff intervention, spoken by the big man himself. So why do we still have a Moderator half-running a player-for-the-player newspaper? I’m sure this point is a whole new debate on its own – something that, as I’m sure you’re pleased to hear, I won’t get into. I think I’ve made my opinions fairly clear already.

So now I talk more directly to Nyxxie. It appears that you, not by force but by common sense, have two options to distinguish. Moderator or Editor?

Bootleggers don’t need you on both.

If you can’t decide, I’m hoping BSF will have the common decency to realise himself (if he reads this, as I’m sure he will at some point). BSF, I’m pretty positive you would never fire Nyxxie for the recent controversy but I’m also pretty confident that you should at least know that I’m right. Many call for her resignation as Moderator, I at least call for her resignation as Editor. Maybe Nyxxie can then focus on her Mod duties more, which I believe is something she needs to do a lot more carefully and correctly. Player-bashing was never tolerated from your staff before… so why is it now?

Again, that’s an entirely different debate. I won’t get into opinions on that matter. At least not yet.

I hope you all enjoy your holidays. You deserve at least that much from me after reading this chunk of blabble.

Enjoy your time,

-Air
