I have been playing bootleggers on and off for a few years now, but believe me when I say I am far from an expert. Despite this I find the game exceptionally good. It is an amazingly simple idea with an ability to captivate its community and create addicts within a few hours. Browser based MMO’s such as Bootleggers are a testament to the capabilities of the internet without immensely high specification requirements. There is no need to spend hard-earned cash on expensive graphics cards and such to enjoy such a unique game.
However, despite its many features and ideas, a problem may soon arise with the medium through which it has been comfortable in for many years. The world is changing fast, with SmartPhone technology advances occurring so rapidly at an almost exponential rate. And yet, with these advances, we are yet to see this game that we play so devotedly venture out into new media.
Imagine having the world of Bootleggers at your fingertips! There is no doubt that by creating another medium through which it can be accessed, Bootleggers’ can grow and expand even more.
The possibilities need not be limited to just a new way of playing the existing game. There is no reason why the concept of Bootleggers cannot be adapted to fit a brand new mould of gameplay in a ‘spin-off’. Imagine a world of Bootleggers with 3D Animation, the ability to transport the world in your pocket, touch screen interface and even a game with a story. All of this and more is achievable with current technology.
Unfortunately there are a number of hindrances into the development of such a project. To begin with there is the sheer amount of time and effort that would be required of all involved. Then there is the issue of collaborating between all involved in the project development – there are a large amount of players of Bootleggers from many different countries.
The major issue of course is the time factor, as none of this is achievable overnight. It would take many weeks of rigorous planning and design to be able to even begin building it.
I imagine many of you are questioning the very point of this article. In answer to you; the point is to try to influence the evolution of a title loved by all of us. For Bootleggers to grow and keep up with competition diversification is surely a must have, but of course it does not need to, nor will it, happen overnight. This is just to get the ball rolling, to hopefully inspire some people with far more expertise in coding than I have to at least think about the achievability of such a project.
