Afty's TV Rip-Offs Afty

If you are unfamiliar with the Radio show, and briefly a TV show, Desert Island Discs, then to sum it up, it’s a show where a guess is invited on to discuss their eight favourite records (albums) and explain why they have chosen those albums. It’s a real national institute of British Radio. Many, many people have appeared on the show, from celebrities to political leaders.

After naming their eight albums, the guest is then asked; if you were marooned on a desert island, with one book and one luxury item, what would you choose and why? This is the part of the show that I’ve decided to write up. I may do a full version with someone for next week. But for this week, I felt that it would be more use to have more people involved with the article.

First up is Jonty:

Book: The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle simply because there are plenty of stories to keep you going and can't ever getting bored of it.

Luxury item: a piano as the luxury item. I can't really play but think would probably have the time to learn!

Next is Purgatory:

Book: Robinson Crusoe, for tips and how to survive.

Luxury item: a flare gun - because if someone comes close, I can signal that I’m there.

I think Purgatory took the question a little bit literally, but hey, that’s his choice!

Following up is Shiver:

Book: Robert Ludlum - The Bourne Identity: One of the best books ever written! It's full of action, intrigues. It's a book you can read over and over again.

Luxury item: A telescopic fishing rod! Why? I don't like coconuts. And with a fishing rod I can try to get some fresh fish.

Here goes MysticWig:

Book: Kurt Cobain Biography by Charles R. Cross (Heavier than Heaven). It is a really captivating book and goes much deeper into Kurt’s life than any other biography I have read, explaining not only what happened in his childhood what caused him to act out how he did but also the events around and leading up to his suicide / murder including the theories surrounding it.

Luxury item: My luxury item would have to be an iPhone. Honestly, I am on it nearly all the time. I think if I lost it I would be lost without it. I don't even wear watches anymore I rely on my phone for even the time and date. Regardless if I have signal or not I use it for all sorts.

Finishing up is non-other than… me:

Book: Happyslapped by a Jellyfish – Karl Pilkington. In fact, any book by Karl Pilkington would do. He is the funniest man on the planet. I’d be pretty miserable on a desert island, without a computer or phone. But at least Karl could cheer me up.

Luxury item: this is pretty simple and basic, but my luxury item would be a book of paper and a pen. I’m a writer; it’s what I’m trying to do. So, without paper and a pen I’d be a bit lost, especially if I had a good idea and had nowhere to write it down. It’d drive me mental.

Thanks everyone for taking part. If you’re interested in doing this short version, or the longer version where you list and talk about your eight favourite albums, then BM me and let me know. It wouldn’t be a huge drain on time. You wouldn’t have to write an essay – short and sweet is fine!
